Can You Put a Marquee on Grass, Patios, Gravel or Artificial Grass?

In most cases, yes, a marquee can be installed on any surface, including grass, hardstanding, gravel, or artificial lawns. When you speak to marquee companies for an initial quote, it’s useful to tell them about the ground conditions at your venue so that they can factor in access, anchoring, flooring, and accessories in the price.

Grass and Lawns

Grass is one of the most common surfaces for Essex marquee hire, especially for weddings and larger private parties. The marquee is usually anchored with stakes driven into the ground, providing excellent stability even in high wind speeds. The main consideration is the weather; heavy rain before or during your event can result in soft, muddy patches if you don’t plan for flooring or matting in busy walkways.

Patios and Hardstanding

On patios, terraces and courtyards, the marquee is held in place with weights or water tanks rather than stakes. This makes hardstanding a practical option when you want the marquee close to a building or where there’s no soft ground available. Since the surface is already level and firm, you don’t always need additional flooring, and you can simply use the existing surface, which helps keep costs down.

Gravel and Driveways

Gravel drives and parking areas can work well as long as the underlying base is compacted and stable. Typically, the frame is secured with heavy blocks rather than traditional ground stakes, and your supplier will assess vehicle access to the area. You may still want to add flooring over the gravel so guests aren’t walking on loose stones, which helps reduce the risk of trips and accidents and prevents stones from being spread across the venue. 

Artificial Grass

Artificial lawns are becoming increasingly common, and a marquee can usually be installed without damaging the surface if installed correctly. Most marquee companies avoid driving stakes into artificial grass; instead, they use weights and place wooden boards under the legs of heavy furniture. It’s also worth planning where delivery vehicles will go, as the sub-base and edging of synthetic turf can vary from garden to garden.

Do You Need a Marquee Floor?

Not every marquee needs a full floor, but the right flooring makes a big difference to appearance, comfort and safety. Generally, the location of the marquee and the formality of the event will determine whether proper flooring is included in your event marquee hire package.

When Flooring is Optional

For summer gatherings on a dry, level lawn, you can use the existing grass or patio as the main surface and add matting at entrances and high-traffic areas. This can suit more informal events where guests are mostly standing or using outdoor furniture. Keeping things simple also helps when space or budget is tight, especially in smaller gardens.

When Flooring is Essential

Flooring is essential when you’re dealing with wet weather, formal events, or occasions with older and younger guests. A solid floor avoids soft or slippery ground underfoot, creates a level surface for tables and chairs, and makes it easier to move around safely. It’s particularly important when the look and feel of the marquee is important, regardless of the weather. 

Flooring and Heels

High heels and uneven ground are rarely a good combination. Without a floor, stilettos can sink into grass or catch on joints between patio slabs or loose gravel, creating trip hazards. A properly fitted floor, often finished with carpet, provides a stable surface for dancing, photographs and speeches, and ensures your marquee feels like a finished venue.

Types of Flooring Available

Standard flooring options for event marquee hire include boarded floors, matting and carpet finishes. Wooden sub-floors can be laid on uneven surfaces, such as across slopes, to make the space safe. Carpets then add warmth and a more aesthetic finish, and you can choose colours to complement your event styling. Sometimes, you can use matting in entrance areas and along walkways to toilets or other structures.

Looking at real events is often the best way to see what’s possible on different surfaces. Here are a few different projects we have worked on at BSW Marquees, highlighting how we can adapt the structure and flooring to suit each site, from private gardens to busy festival grounds.

Halloween Party 

For a Halloween party in Felsted, Essex, we installed a marquee for around 100 guests and worked to fit the 60’ x 30’ frame into the garden and patio area, with the entrance sitting alongside the house. The marquee sat on two different surfaces, and we secured the structure using the most appropriate solutions for each location. Inside, the space was finished with black starcloth linings and lighting to create a dramatic atmosphere without compromising on safety.

Beer Festival 

At Channels Golf Club in Little Waltham, Chelmsford, we supplied a 40’ x 30’ frame marquee for an annual St George’s Day beer festival held on the club grounds. Since it was erected on a patio, we didn’t supply flooring for the marquee, and wooden tables, chairs, and benches were used for additional seating. The extra capacity provided by a marquee enabled the event to bring in extra customers and made it one to remember.

Music Events

For music events such as the Curious Arts Festival at Pylewell Park in Hampshire and the Writtle Jazz Festival in Essex, we supplied a mix of traditional and frame marquees across showground-style lawns.
