When picturing a marquee, most people imagine it standing on a large lawn. However, grass isn’t the only option. In many cases, marquees can also be installed on patios, driveways, courtyards, car parks, or other hard-standing areas.

This can be a practical solution when garden space is limited, the ground is uneven, or the marquee needs to be closer to a house, venue or commercial building. However, installing on a hard surface requires a different approach from erecting a marquee on grass.

Can a Marquee Be Installed on a Hard Surface?

Yes, marquees can often be installed on concrete, paving, tarmac, block paving and other firm surfaces. A clearspan marquee will usually be the most suitable option.

Unlike a traditional marquee, a framed structure doesn’t require central poles or long external guy ropes. This creates a clear, open interior and helps make better use of restricted spaces. It also offers more flexibility when positioning tables, seating, bars, dance floors, and stages.

The structure can also be built in different lengths to adapt the layout to the shape of the available area rather than trying to fit a standard marquee into an unsuitable space. The exact requirements will depend on where the marquee is being installed

• Patios: A patio can work particularly well when it’s directly outside a house, allowing the marquee to feel like an extension of the indoor space. This can give guests convenient access to kitchens, toilets and reception rooms. 

• Driveways: A driveway can provide useful event space when the garden is too small, uneven or needed for another purpose. The surface material and gradient are particularly important. Gravel might move under flooring, block paving can be uneven, and resin or tarmac might need additional protection beneath ballast. 

• Courtyards and commercial hard standing: Courtyards, school playgrounds and business car parks can be used for a range of events. Surrounding buildings might restrict installation access and anchoring space, and it’s important to consider how installation and collection can be organised around normal operations.

Whatever the location, the surface is only one part of the assessment. At BSW Marquees, we also consider its condition, slope, surrounding space, access and whether there is enough room to safely anchor the structure.

How is a Marquee Secured on a Patio or Driveway?

Every marquee needs to be properly anchored as its walls and roof can catch the wind. For garden parties or shows in fields, stakes are normally driven into the ground. On a patio, driveway or concrete surface, this isn’t always possible. 

A hard-standing marquee might need a weighted ballast system. Weights are positioned around the framework to securely hold the structure in place. The amount of ballast required will depend on the marquee’s size, design, location and exposure to the weather.

It’s important to remember that these weights take up space. An area might seem wide enough for the main structure but lack enough room around the edges for safe anchoring. In some circumstances, mechanical fixings can be used, but we never assume that we can drill into a patio or driveway. This would need to be discussed and approved in advance, with underground services such as drainage pipes, electrical cables and water supplies taken into account.

Will the Installation Damage the Surface?

A properly planned marquee shouldn’t damage a patio or driveway, but the condition and material of the surface need to be understood. Concrete, tarmac, resin, decorative paving and loose gravel all behave differently. Recently laid surfaces, cracked slabs, sunken block paving and drainage channels might need careful consideration. 

Protective materials can be used beneath equipment where required. At BSW Marquees, we recommend telling us about any recently installed paving, underground heating, electric vehicle charging cables or areas that need special protection during the initial planning stage.

Will You Need Marquee Flooring?

Having a solid surface doesn’t necessarily mean that you need additional flooring. However, paving joints, gravel, and changes in level can create an uncomfortable or uneven surface for guests. A marquee flooring system provides a more consistent base for tables, chairs, bars and dance floors. It can also improve the overall appearance of the interior, particularly for more formal parties, weddings and corporate events.

Whether flooring is recommended will depend on the condition of the existing surface and how the marquee will be used. A simple covered area for a short reception will have different requirements from a dining marquee containing a bar, stage and dance floor.

Entrances should also be considered. Where the finished floor sits above the surrounding patio or driveway, suitable steps or a ramp might be needed. Planning accessibility from the start helps ensure that all guests will be able to enter comfortably.

Does the Outdoor Surface Need to Be Level?

A perfectly level surface is helpful, but a slight gradient doesn’t always prevent a marquee from being installed. Many patios and driveways have a deliberate slope for drainage. The important question is whether the slope will affect comfort or safety. A surface that seems almost level when empty can feel very different once tables and chairs are in position.

A levelled flooring solution might be possible in some locations. However, there are practical limits to changes in height. A steep or badly uneven surface might require a different marquee position or layout. Photographs and measurements are useful at the enquiry stage, but a site visit gives us a clearer understanding of any potential concerns.

Can the Marquee Sit Beside a House or Building?

A clearspan marquee can often be positioned directly next to a house, hotel, school or commercial building. This can create a convenient flow between the existing venue and the temporary space. For example, guests might access the marquee through patio doors, while caterers continue to use the kitchen inside. At a business event, the marquee might provide extra hospitality space beside the main premises.

However, placing a marquee close to a building requires careful planning. Doors and windows might need to remain accessible, while gutters, downpipes and roof overhangs can influence the height and position. Often, the structure will sit close to the property without being physically attached, depending on the site.

How Much Space and Access are Needed?

When measuring a possible location for marquee hire, focus on the clear, usable area. Exclude any permanent features such as steps, raised beds, walls and planters. Additional space might also be needed for anchoring and entrances.

We will need to know the expected guest numbers and how the marquee will be used to determine approximate dimensions. A seated meal requires more space than a standing drinks reception, while adding a dance floor, stage or bar will increase the required footprint.

Access is just as important as the finished dimensions. Our team needs to carry framework sections, flooring and other equipment safely from the delivery vehicle to the installation area. Narrow gates, tight corners, and overhead cables can affect the installation. Restricted access doesn’t always rule out a marquee, but it may influence the solution we recommend.

Is Every Hard-Standing Area Suitable?

Not every patio, driveway or courtyard will be suitable for a marquee. A site might be too steep, badly damaged, difficult to access or unable to accommodate a safe anchoring system.

Overhead cables, low trees, poor drainage and restricted emergency routes can also affect what’s possible. However, an unsuitable first location doesn’t necessarily mean that the event can’t go ahead as planned. Our team will suggest a different orientation, a smaller structure, or an alternative area of the site whenever possible.
